Rest camps in the heart of Kruger National Park are the ideal location for bird photography! The smaller species, having become accustomed to the presence of people, are especially a treat to observe and document. Letaba is one of my personal favorites and is fantastic for just that. I was there recently and one such sighting that stood out among the owls, barbets and bushbabies was a family of Golden-tailed Woodpeckers, Campethera abingoni, nesting in the hollow of a small acacia tree. The residents include a pair of chirpy youngsters and of course the two ever-busy parents. ....more
